Tesla With Kids: The Accessories That Actually Matter

Five things in order of how much they matter, and a straight answer on three car seats across the back.

Carrying children changes the accessory priorities completely, and in a direction most buying guides do not reflect. The usual order — mats, then shades, then console — is wrong here. What matters with children is protecting surfaces that take permanent damage, and shading glass the child is actually sitting next to.

The order that matters

  1. Seat-back protection. The damage is permanent, it happens within weeks, and with a rear-facing seat the contact point moves up the seat back as the child grows. Buy the full cover rather than a kick mat if the seat is rear-facing.
  2. Side and rear window shades. Low afternoon sun comes in sideways onto a rear-facing child, and nothing about a roof shade helps with that. This is the shade most parents should buy and the one almost nobody does.
  3. Rear footwell liners. Everything that comes off those shoes ends up here.
  4. Under-seat vent covers. A few dollars against a genuinely infuriating retrieval job.
  5. Rear screen protection, if your car has an 8-inch rear screen — a Highland or a Juniper Premium. It is at child height and it gets handled rather than touched.

1. Buy first

BASENOR 3-piece rear seat-back cover

BASENOR

Full rear-face coverage including the center section, which is what a rear-facing seat needs because the contact point moves upward as the child grows. It changes how the cabin looks from the back seat, and there is more material to clean.

Best for: Families — the largest protected surface area available

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

What works

  • Covers the whole seat back rather than just the kick zone, which is what you want with toddlers
  • Three pieces means the center section is covered too, not just the two outer seats

What does not

  • Full coverage changes how the cabin looks from the back seat
  • More material to remove and clean than a small kick mat

Manufacturer specifications

  • Three pieces covering the full rear face of the front seats
  • Listed across Model Y, Model 3 and the Juniper
  • Wipe-clean surface

JOWUA side, rear and liftgate window sunshade set

JOWUA

Side and rear glass is where low afternoon sun actually reaches a child in a rear-facing seat, and a roof shade does nothing about it. Per-aperture cuts rather than suction cups. Fiddly to fit, and it reduces rear-quarter visibility.

Best for: Rear-facing child seats and dogs in the back

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y (2020-2024)

What works

  • Side glass is where low afternoon sun actually hits a rear-seat passenger, and a roof shade does nothing about it
  • Per-window cuts mean no suction cups and no gaps

What does not

  • A multi-piece set is fiddly to fit and remove compared to one windshield shade
  • Reduces visibility out of the rear quarters, which some drivers will not accept

Manufacturer specifications

  • Covers side glass, rear quarter glass and the liftgate window
  • Cut per window aperture rather than a universal panel
  • Listed for the 2025+ Model Y

3. Buy third

WeatherTech FloorLiner

WeatherTech

Whatever is on children's shoes ends up in the rear footwell, and tall walls contain it. Rigid underfoot and utilitarian, which matters less in the back.

Best for: Snow-belt owners who want the deepest tray walls available

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Coverage9.5

Cleanability9.0
Value7.0
Overall8.6/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • The tall perimeter wall is the most convincing containment in this category for slush and road salt
  • A long-standing fitment database means the year you own is usually explicitly listed, not implied

What does not

  • The rigid material is the least pleasant underfoot of the premium options and can creak on a cold morning
  • Finish is utilitarian — nobody buys these because they look good

Manufacturer specifications

  • High-density tri-extruded material with raised channel walls
  • Digitally measured per vehicle and per model year
  • US-manufactured; the company's own fitment lookup is by year, make and model

Under-seat air vent covers

TOPABYTE

The under-seat vents are where dropped toys and crumbs end up, and retrieving them is genuinely awkward. Open-grille type only, never a solid panel.

Best for: Stopping debris falling into the rear footwell vents

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Fit8.0

Value9.0
Overall8.4/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Those vents collect coins, crumbs and small toys, and clearing them is genuinely awkward
  • No adhesive, so nothing is permanent
  • One of the cheapest protective parts on the car

What does not

  • Any cover restricts airflow to some degree — fit the open-grille type, not a solid panel
  • Easy to dislodge when vacuuming

Manufacturer specifications

  • Grille covers for the rear-facing vents beneath the front seats
  • Clip or friction fit with no adhesive
  • Listed across Model 3 and Model Y fitments

Three car seats across the back

This is the single most-asked question about these cars and it deserves a careful answer rather than a confident one. The honest position: whether three child seats fit across a Model Y's second row depends on the specific seats, their widths at the base and at the shoulder, whether any are high-backed boosters, and which belt and anchor positions each one needs. Three narrow boosters are a very different proposition from two bulky rear-facing seats and a booster.

We are not going to publish a yes or a no, because the honest answer varies by seat and a wrong answer here is not a minor inconvenience. What we will say is how to find out definitively: take your actual seats to the car and fit them, before you need to rely on it. Most retailers will allow a fitting, and a child-seat technician will check installation properly. That is a better use of an afternoon than any article on the subject.

Accessories to avoid with children in the car

  • Under-seat storage boxes. They stop a child sliding their feet under the front seat, and anything in them is unrestrained.
  • Anything hard and loose in the cabin. A rigid organizer sitting on the rear seat or floor is a projectile.
  • Seat covers that interfere with a belt path or an anchor point. Rear-face protectors do not; anything that wraps a seat cushion might.
  • Suction-cup window shades, which fail in heat and drop into the footwell.

The unglamorous one that helps most

A cargo liner with a raised loading-edge lip, and a soft trunk organizer. Not because children damage the cargo area, but because a pushchair, a scooter and a bag of wet swimming kit all live in the back of a family car, and a wipeable floor with somewhere for things to stay put removes more daily friction than almost anything else. See cargo liners and trunk mats.

Questions people actually ask

Can a Tesla Model Y fit three car seats?

It depends entirely on the specific seats — their width at the base and shoulder, whether any are high-backed boosters, and the belt and anchor positions each needs. Take your actual seats to the car and fit them rather than relying on a general answer.

What should I buy first for a Tesla with children?

Full seat-back covers, then side and rear window shades. Both address problems that a general accessory guide ranks much lower.

Do I need a roof sunshade for kids in the back?

Side-window shades help them more. Low afternoon sun arrives sideways, and a roof shade does not intercept any of it.

Should I protect the rear screen?

If your car has one and children use it, there is a real case — it is handled rather than touched. Tesla's guidance against covering touchscreens still applies.
