Close-up of an upholstered car seat back

Seat-back damage in a family car is not a risk, it is a certainty. A child in a rear-facing seat kicks the seat back directly, repeatedly, with shoes on, at a specific height. A child in a forward-facing seat kicks it when getting in and out. On fabric the marks are permanent; on vegan leather they scuff and eventually crease.

Which product you want is decided almost entirely by one measurement: how high up the seat back your child's feet actually reach. Below the midpoint, a kick mat is enough and cheaper. Above it, you need a full cover. Go and look before you buy — the scuff marks will already tell you.

1. Best overall

BASENOR 3-piece rear seat-back cover

BASENOR

Three pieces covering the full rear face of the front seats, including the center section most sets ignore, in a wipe-clean surface. Full coverage changes how the cabin looks from the back seat, and there is more material to remove and clean than with a small kick mat.

Best for: Families — the largest protected surface area available

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Overall8.9/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Covers the whole seat back rather than just the kick zone, which is what you want with toddlers
  • Three pieces means the center section is covered too, not just the two outer seats

What does not

  • Full coverage changes how the cabin looks from the back seat
  • More material to remove and clean than a small kick mat

Manufacturer specifications

  • Three pieces covering the full rear face of the front seats
  • Listed across Model Y, Model 3 and the Juniper

2. Best targeted option

BASENOR leather seat-back kick protector

BASENOR

A microfibre leather panel aimed precisely at the scuff zone, with a genuinely useful pocket for a tablet or bottle, and a finish that sits better with the factory interior than nylon. It leaves the upper seat back exposed, which matters if your child is tall enough to reach it.

Best for: The exact height children's shoes hit

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

What works

  • Targets the scuff zone precisely instead of covering the whole seat
  • The pocket is genuinely useful for a tablet or a water bottle
  • Leather-look finish sits better with the factory interior than a nylon mat

3. Widest fitment

Yeslak seat-back kick protector

Yeslak

Listed across Model 3 and Model Y from 2017 through 2026 and later, with a waterproof stain-resistant surface — useful for a two-car household. A part that fits everything fits nothing perfectly, so expect a slightly generic outline, and the pocket is shallow.

Best for: One part that covers every Model 3 and Model Y generation

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y L (2026+, six-seat) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

What works

  • The broadest fitment claim in this group, which simplifies buying for a two-car household
  • Waterproof surface means spilled drinks wipe off rather than soak in

What does not

  • A part that fits everything fits nothing perfectly — expect a slightly generic outline
  • Pocket is shallow compared with the BASENOR equivalent

4. The finishing piece

BASENOR anti-kick side mats

BASENOR

Panels for the lower side trim beside the rear footwells, which still get filthy after you have protected the seat backs. Only worth buying alongside seat-back protection, and the current sets are Juniper-specific.

Best for: The lower side panels that seat-back covers miss

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)

What works

The part nobody protects

The lower side trim beside the rear footwells gets as dirty as anything in the car and almost nobody covers it. Children's shoes brush it every time they climb in. If you are already buying seat-back protection, the side panels are a small addition that stops the back of the cabin looking tired.

What about the floor?

The rear footwell takes the dirt that gets kicked off those shoes, and a seat-back cover does nothing about it. If you are protecting the back of the car for children, all-weather rear liners are the other half of the same job — and on a Model Y the rear footwell liner is usually sold as a separate piece from the fronts.

Our full list for carrying children in these cars is in the Model Y with kids checklist.

Questions people actually ask

Seat-back covers or kick mats?

Look at where the existing scuff marks are. Below the midpoint of the seat back, a kick mat is enough. Above it, buy the full cover.

Do they fit over the seat-back pockets?

Most are designed to, and many add their own pocket. Check the listing if you rely on the factory pockets.

Will a cover interfere with seat movement or airbags?

Covers for the rear face of a front seat do not interfere with seat movement. Side-impact airbags are in the seat bolsters, not the rear face, so a rear-face cover is not in their path — but never fit a cover over a seat bolster.

Can I machine wash them?

Microfibre leather, no — wipe clean. Fabric kick mats, usually yes on a cool wash. Check the listing, because heat can distort a stiffened backing panel.
