Model Y (2020-2024)

Best Glass Roof Sunshade for the Model Y (2020-2024)

The legacy roof has the longer product history and the better bundle pricing. It also has the most listings drifting toward the newer car.

Fitment: Model Y (2020-2024) · Full Model Y 2020-2024 fitment guide

Passenger reclining in a car with the roof glass open to the sky above

The 2020-2024 Model Y has been on sale long enough that the shade market for it is mature: the patterns are well established, several brands offer multi-shade bundles, and prices have settled. The problem is drift. As the market moved to the Juniper, listings began leading with 2025-2026 fitment, and a brand that once sold a clearly-labeled legacy shade now sometimes buries it in a variant picker.

The bundle is the genuinely interesting option on this generation. Buying the roof shade, the windshield shade and the side-glass set together costs less than buying them individually, and it covers every aperture that matters. If you are starting from nothing and you park outdoors, that is the efficient purchase. If you already have a windshield shade, buy the roof panel alone.

1. Best overall

JOWUA glass roof sunshade (Model Y 2021-2024)

JOWUA

The correct pattern for the pre-2025 roof, which is genuinely a different shape, with the same folding mesh construction as the Juniper version. Mesh can sag slightly over a large roof in extreme heat.

Best for: Legacy Model Y owners who want the same folding design

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024)

Overall8.6/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • The correct pattern for the pre-2025 roof, which is genuinely a different shape
  • The bundle is the cheapest way to shade the whole greenhouse at once

What does not

  • Does not fit a Juniper — check the year before buying, as the listings look nearly identical
  • Mesh over a large roof can sag slightly in extreme heat

Manufacturer specifications

  • Legacy Model Y roof pattern, listed separately from the Juniper part
  • Mesh fabric, folding storage
  • Also offered as part of a multi-shade bundle with the windshield and side glass

JOWUA windshield sunshade

JOWUA

Not a roof shade, and deliberately on this list anyway. Cut to the windshield shape, claimed to block up to 99% of UV, and it addresses the parked-heat problem a roof shade cannot. Only works while parked.

Best for: Anyone who parks outside — the highest-value shade you can buy

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y L (2026+, six-seat) · Model Y (2020-2024) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)

Overall9.0/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Solves the actual parked-heat problem — the windshield is the biggest single heat aperture in the car
  • Far cheaper than a roof shade and takes fifteen seconds to deploy
  • Cut to shape, so there is no gap at the corners where a universal shade leaves one

What does not

  • Only works while parked, unlike a roof shade which works while driving
  • Has to be stowed somewhere when you drive off

Manufacturer specifications

  • Black mesh fabric with a silver anti-light coating
  • Manufacturer claims up to 99% UV blocking
  • Cut to the specific windshield shape; listed for Juniper and Model Y L

Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

3. Budget pick

EcoNour windshield sunshade

EcoNour

Sized rather than cut to shape, so expect gaps at the A-pillars and permanent creasing in the foil. It still removes most of the greenhouse effect for very little money.

Best for: The cheapest meaningful improvement to a hot parked cabin

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Fit6.5

Build7.0
Value9.5
Overall7.9/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Costs a fraction of a car-specific shade and removes most of the greenhouse effect anyway
  • Easy to replace when it eventually creases

What does not

  • Sized rather than cut to shape, so expect gaps at the A-pillars
  • Foil creases permanently and looks tired faster than coated fabric

Manufacturer specifications

  • Reflective foil windshield shade sold in size ranges rather than per-car patterns
  • Folds into a sleeve
  • Widely stocked

KUST

Per-vehicle cutting at a mid-market price, covering both cars. Less independent fit reporting than the Tesla specialists, and the variant naming is less clear.

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

The legacy roof is one large panel

The pre-refresh Model Y roof is a single large glass area, which makes the shade for it large too. Two consequences follow. First, sag in the middle is a real possibility in sustained heat, and a shade with a proper support structure is worth more here than on a smaller roof. Second, the folded package is bulky — check that it will actually live wherever you intend to store it before you decide to run it seasonally.

Do not buy a Juniper shade

It will not clip in. The refreshed roof changed the structure and the trim channel. Juniper vs 2020-2024 fitment explains exactly what differs and how to tell which car you have, in the two minutes it takes to avoid a return.

Questions people actually ask

Will a Juniper roof shade fit my 2022 Model Y?

No. Buy a shade listed for 2020-2024, or 2021-2024 where a brand splits it that way.

Is the sunshade bundle worth it?

If you do not yet own a windshield shade, yes — the bundle is cheaper than buying the pieces separately and the windshield shade is the one that does the most work. If you already have one, buy the roof panel alone.

Does the roof shade stop the roof getting hot?

No. The glass still heats up. What a shade does is intercept the radiant heat before it reaches you, which is why the cabin feels cooler even though the glass does not.

How long does a mesh shade last?

The fabric outlives the frame in almost every case. Frames fail at the folds, which is why fold-cycle durability is the specification worth looking for.
