Model 3 Highland: What to Buy First

Smaller car, different priorities. The windshield shade matters more here and the roof shade matters less.

Fitment: Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Full Model 3 Highland fitment guide

White Tesla Model 3 crossing a busy city intersection

The Highland is a different car from the Model Y in ways that change the accessory order. It is smaller, lower, has less glass overhead, a shallower frunk and a sedan boot with a small aperture. Advice written for a Model Y transfers badly, and the most common consequence is new Highland owners buying a roof shade first when they should have bought a windshield shade.

The one fitment bonus this car has

The Highland console and the Model Y Juniper console are close enough that most brands tool a single part for both. That means Highland owners can buy from a much larger pool of console parts with confidence, which is the opposite of the usual situation. Exploit it — see Highland vs Juniper console fitment.

It does not extend any further. Floor mats, roof shades, cargo parts and sills are all Model 3 shapes, and a Model Y part will not do.

1. Week one

JOWUA windshield sunshade

JOWUA

On a Model 3, where the roof glass area is smaller than a Model Y's, the windshield is an even larger share of the heat getting in. Cut to shape, claimed 99% UV block. Parked use only.

Best for: Anyone who parks outside — the highest-value shade you can buy

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y L (2026+, six-seat) · Model Y (2020-2024) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)

Build8.5
Value9.5
Overall9.0/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Solves the actual parked-heat problem — the windshield is the biggest single heat aperture in the car
  • Far cheaper than a roof shade and takes fifteen seconds to deploy
  • Cut to shape, so there is no gap at the corners where a universal shade leaves one

What does not

  • Only works while parked, unlike a roof shade which works while driving
  • Has to be stowed somewhere when you drive off

Manufacturer specifications

  • Black mesh fabric with a silver anti-light coating
  • Manufacturer claims up to 99% UV blocking
  • Cut to the specific windshield shape; listed for Juniper and Model Y L

Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

BASENOR 4-piece center console organizer set

BASENOR

The Highland console is shared tooling with the Juniper, so this set covers it, and it won on fitment in a comparison of eight sets. Four pieces, four edges to seat; soft TPU marks more easily.

Best for: Juniper and Highland owners reorganizing the whole console in one go

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Capacity8.5
Access9.0
Value9.0
Overall9.1/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • TPU absorbs vibration where rigid ABS transmits it, which is the single biggest cause of console rattle
  • The hidden armrest compartment is the piece that actually changes how you use the car day to day
  • One set covers every surface in the console instead of leaving gaps between parts

What does not

  • Four pieces means four opportunities for a slightly loose edge
  • Soft TPU picks up marks more readily than a hard plastic tray

Manufacturer specifications

  • Four pieces: console tray, armrest storage box, armrest hidden storage and a cup-holder insert mat
  • TPU rather than ABS
  • Listed for the 2025-2026 Model Y Juniper and 2024-2026 Model 3 Highland

3. Week two

3W full-coverage TPE liner kit

3W

3W lists this kit for the Highland with its own part numbers rather than a shared mat. Dense TPE and the broadest coverage available. The seat-back pieces are the weakest part of the kit.

Best for: Juniper owners who want the densest TPE and the widest coverage

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Fit9.0
Coverage9.5
Material8.5
Cleanability8.5
Value8.5
Overall8.8/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • The broadest single-kit coverage we found for the Juniper, seat backs included
  • Came out ahead of both MAXpider and WeatherTech on fit in one independent Juniper comparison

What does not

  • A newer name than WeatherTech or MAXpider, so there is less long-run evidence of how the material ages
  • Seat-back pieces are a nice extra but are not as well finished as dedicated seat-back protectors

Manufacturer specifications

  • TPE throughout, described by the manufacturer as a higher-density compound than entry-level sets
  • Kit covers footwells, frunk, cargo floor, sub-trunk and seat backs
  • Separate part numbers per Model Y generation

BASENOR leather seat-back kick protector

BASENOR

Microfibre leather at the exact height children's shoes reach, with a useful pocket. It leaves the upper seat back exposed, which matters if your child is tall enough to reach it.

Best for: The exact height children's shoes hit

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Overall8.7/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Targets the scuff zone precisely instead of covering the whole seat
  • The pocket is genuinely useful for a tablet or a water bottle
  • Leather-look finish sits better with the factory interior than a nylon mat

What does not

  • Leaves the upper seat back exposed, which matters if your child is tall enough to reach it
  • Microfibre leather marks if you clean it with the wrong product

Manufacturer specifications

  • Microfibre leather panel targeting the lower seat back
  • Integrated storage pocket
  • Listed for Model Y, Model 3, Model S and Model X

Why the roof shade is lower priority here

A Highland has meaningfully less glass above your head than a Model Y, so a roof shade delivers less for the same money. Meanwhile the windshield remains the largest aperture in the car and the main reason a parked cabin becomes unpleasant. On this car the order is windshield first, roof second, and the gap between them is wider than on a Model Y. Roof or windshield: which first sets out the reasoning.

The rear screen

The Highland has an 8-inch rear screen the earlier Model 3 never had, sitting in the back of the console at roughly child height. If children ride in the back, that screen will be handled, and unlike the front display it is not touched by a careful fingertip. It is the one place in the car where a protector has the strongest case — though Tesla's guidance against covering touchscreens does not carve it out. See rear screen protectors.

What to skip

  • A rigid frunk organizer. The Highland frunk is shallow enough that an organizer costs real capacity, and a Model Y part will not let the hood close. See Model 3 frunk organizers.
  • A full-size cargo system. The sedan boot's limit is the aperture, not the volume, so a collapsible organizer beats a rigid one.
  • Mud flaps, unless you drive on treated or gravel roads. Check the rocker panel behind the front wheel after a wet week.

Confirm you have a Highland

No indicator stalk on the steering column. The rear screen and the ambient light strip round the cabin are the other checks, and all three beat looking up a build date. The Highland fitment page collects every category for this car.

Questions people actually ask

What should I buy first for a Model 3 Highland?

A windshield sunshade and a console organizer set. Add seat-back protection in week one if children ride in the back.

Can I use Model Y console parts?

Juniper console parts generally fit, because the tooling is shared. Nothing else transfers from a Model Y.

Is a roof sunshade worth it on a Highland?

Less than on a Model Y, because there is less glass overhead. Buy the windshield shade first and judge the roof afterwards.

Should I protect the rear screen?

It is the surface most likely to be handled carelessly. Tesla's guidance against covering touchscreens applies to it too, so weigh both.
