Search volume says owners want roof sunshades. Physics says they should buy windshield shades. Both can be true, because the two products address different things, and nobody selling either one has much incentive to say so.
Two different problems
| Windshield shade | Roof shade | |
|---|---|---|
| Works when | Parked | Driving and parked |
| Problem solved | Cabin temperature after the car has sat in the sun | Radiant heat and glare on your head while driving |
| Relative cost | Low | High |
| Deploy time | About fifteen seconds | A couple of minutes |
| Needs storing | Yes | Only if you remove it seasonally |
| Noticeable the moment you open the door | Yes | No |
Why the windshield wins on value
A parked car heats up through the greenhouse effect: sunlight comes in through glass, is absorbed by the dash, seats and trim, and is re-radiated as longer-wavelength heat that the glass does not let back out. The windshield is the largest piece of glass in the car, it faces the sun for most of the day, and nothing else shades it. Blocking it stops most of the energy going in.
The glass roof is large too, but it is horizontal, which means it only takes direct sun around midday, and in many cars it has more aggressive factory tinting than the windshield does. Shading it helps while you drive, because that is when your head is directly under it. It does less to the temperature the car reaches while parked.
The order we would buy in
- Windshield shade. Cheapest, biggest effect on the thing you actually complain about.
- Roof shade, if overhead sun bothers you while driving. This is a comfort upgrade and a real one.
- Side and rear shades, if you carry children or a dog in the back. Low sun through side glass is what reaches them.
When to buy the roof shade first instead
There is a legitimate case. If you garage the car — so parked heat is not a problem — but spend long hours driving in high sun, then the roof shade is the one that helps and the windshield shade is solving a problem you do not have. Same if overhead glare gives you headaches, which is more common than people admit.
Both of these are about your actual conditions, not about which product is better. That is the point of this page: work out which of the two problems you have before you spend anything.
Buy this one first
If you only buy one shade this year, the answer is clear enough to name a product.

1. Buy first
JOWUA glass roof sunshade (Juniper 2025+)
The glass roof is the largest single heat-gain surface in these cars, which is why it comes before the windshield for almost everybody. Rigid panels that stay located are what makes the difference between owning one and using one.
Best for: Juniper owners who want a roof shade that folds away rather than living on the roof
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- Folds down small enough to live under a seat, so you can run it only in summer
- Mesh keeps the cabin from going fully dark, which is the usual complaint about solid panels
- Juniper-specific pattern — the refreshed roof structure is not the same shape as the legacy car
What does not
- Mesh will always block less heat than an opaque reflective panel
- Folding and refitting is a two-minute job, so it is not something you will do daily
Manufacturer specifications
- Double-sided high-density mesh fabric
- Folds for storage rather than retracting on a rail
- Sold in two fabric variants, the darker of which the manufacturer rates for greater heat reduction
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

2. Buy second
JOWUA windshield sunshade
Smaller area, but it is the one that keeps the steering wheel and the screen bezel out of direct sun, and it takes ten seconds to fit. Worth having once the roof is handled.
Best for: Anyone who parks outside — the highest-value shade you can buy
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y L (2026+, six-seat) · Model Y (2020-2024) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)
What works
- Solves the actual parked-heat problem — the windshield is the biggest single heat aperture in the car
- Far cheaper than a roof shade and takes fifteen seconds to deploy
- Cut to shape, so there is no gap at the corners where a universal shade leaves one
What does not
- Only works while parked, unlike a roof shade which works while driving
- Has to be stowed somewhere when you drive off
Manufacturer specifications
- Black mesh fabric with a silver anti-light coating
- Manufacturer claims up to 99% UV blocking
- Cut to the specific windshield shape; listed for Juniper and Model Y L
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

Questions people actually ask
Do I need both?
Most owners who park outdoors and drive in summer end up with both, and the bundles exist because of that. Buy them in the order above rather than together, so you can judge whether the second one is needed.
Is a bundle cheaper?
Usually yes, and that is a real saving if you were going to buy both anyway. It is not a saving if you only needed one of them.
Does the roof shade help at all while parked?
Somewhat, because it blocks the midday sun coming straight down. The windshield still accounts for much more of the heat gain over a full day.
What about tinting instead?
Aftermarket tinting is permanent, invisible and limited by state law. A shade blocks considerably more than legal tinting can and comes out when you want the view back. They are complements, not alternatives.
