There are two mechanisms for shading a Tesla's glass roof. A fixed panel clips into the trim channel and stays there until you take it out. A retractable shade runs on rails and rolls or slides away, and some are motorized. Owners search for the retractable version constantly, which is understandable — it sounds like the better product.
What retractable buys you
- The ability to open the view in seconds, without unclipping and folding anything.
- No storage problem, because the shade lives in its own housing.
- A more finished look, closer to a factory-fitted shade.
What it costs you
- Money. Retractable and motorized shades sit well above folding panels.
- Reliability. Rails, rollers and in the motorized case a motor and a switch are all failure points a folding panel does not have.
- Heat performance. A shade that must roll into a housing has to be thin and flexible, which rules out the thicker coated fabrics that block the most heat.
- Headroom, in some designs, because the housing and rails sit below the glass.
| Retractable / electric | Fixed folding panel | |
|---|---|---|
| Relative cost | High | Low to moderate |
| Heat blocked | Moderate — thin fabric required | Moderate to high, depending on fabric |
| Failure points | Rails, rollers, motor, switch | Frame folds, clips |
| Storage when not in use | None needed | Needs somewhere to live |
| Time to deploy or stow | Seconds | A couple of minutes |
| Repairability | Usually replace the unit | Often just the frame |
Our call
Fit a folding panel. If you want the shade in all summer and out all winter, convenience hardly matters — you are deploying it twice a year — and you get better heat performance, a lower price and far less to break. The folding panels are also where every serious brand is competing, which means better fitment per generation.
Retractable is the right choice in exactly one case: you genuinely want the glass roof open to the view most of the time and shaded only occasionally, and you are prepared to pay for that and accept a mechanism. That is a real preference and a reasonable one. It is just not the common one, and the market mostly prices it as a novelty.
For the specific folding panels we would buy, see Juniper roof shades, 2020-2024 Model Y roof shades or Model 3 Highland shades.

Fixed panels are what the market actually sells for these cars. Here is the best of them, and the closest thing to the alternative.

1. Best fixed panel
JOWUA glass roof sunshade (Juniper 2025+)
Rigid-framed panels that locate into the roof structure and stay put, which is the failure point that matters: a shade that sags is a shade you stop fitting. They have to be removed and stored rather than retracted.
Best for: Juniper owners who want a roof shade that folds away rather than living on the roof
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- Folds down small enough to live under a seat, so you can run it only in summer
- Mesh keeps the cabin from going fully dark, which is the usual complaint about solid panels
- Juniper-specific pattern — the refreshed roof structure is not the same shape as the legacy car
What does not
- Mesh will always block less heat than an opaque reflective panel
- Folding and refitting is a two-minute job, so it is not something you will do daily
Manufacturer specifications
- Double-sided high-density mesh fabric
- Folds for storage rather than retracting on a rail
- Sold in two fabric variants, the darker of which the manufacturer rates for greater heat reduction

2. Best foldable
BASENOR nano ice-crystal foldable roof sunshade
Folds down small enough to live in the frunk between uses, which is the practical answer to the storage objection against fixed panels. Less rigid in place as a result.
Best for: Owners who want a stiffer frame that holds its shape
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- The frame is the part that usually fails on folding shades, and this is the one brand making a specific durability claim about it
- Coated fabric blocks more heat than open mesh
What does not
- Blocks more light too — the cabin is noticeably darker than with a mesh shade
- Stiffer frame means a larger folded package to store
Manufacturer specifications
- Nano ice-crystal coated fabric over a folding frame
- Manufacturer states the frame was fold-cycle tested and claims substantially greater frame durability than plain steel
- Listed for the 2025-2026 Juniper

Questions people actually ask
Are electric Tesla sunshades worth it?
Rarely. You pay considerably more for convenience you use twice a year, and you add a motor and switch to a part that otherwise has nothing to fail.
Do retractable shades block less heat?
Generally yes. Rolling into a housing requires thin, flexible fabric, which rules out the thicker coated materials that block the most radiant heat.
Does a retractable shade reduce headroom?
Some designs do, because the rails and housing sit below the glass line. Check the published depth if you have tall rear passengers.
Can a folding panel be left in permanently?
Yes. Most owners who run a shade through summer simply leave it clipped in and remove it in autumn.
