How to Install a Tesla Sunshade

A couple of minutes per panel, no tools, and two specific mistakes that account for almost every shade that sags or falls out.

Hands polishing a car interior panel with a cloth

Neither job needs tools and neither takes long. What they do need is the right order of operations, because almost every shade that sags in the middle or works itself loose at one end was fitted in the wrong sequence rather than being a bad product.

Roof panel: the method

  1. Step 1. Unroll and let it relax

A shade shipped folded has set creases, especially in the frame. Open it out flat somewhere warm for twenty minutes before you try to fit it. A cold, creased frame fights you and is more likely to crack at a fold.

  2. Step 2. Identify the trim channel

Run a finger along the edge of the glass on each side. There is a channel between the glass and the headlining trim, and that is what the shade's edge or clips locate into. Find it before you are holding a panel over your head.

  3. Step 3. Work front to back, one side at a time

Seat the leading edge at the front of the aperture first. Then take one side and work it into the channel along its full length before touching the other side. Doing both sides partway and then trying to tension the middle is the first of the two mistakes.

  4. Step 4. Seat the far end last, under slight tension

The rear edge is the one that works loose. It should go in with the panel slightly stretched rather than slack. If the panel is slack when the rear edge seats, the middle will sag within a day.

  5. Step 5. Run a finger round the whole perimeter

Check every clip or edge is fully home. One unseated clip is the second of the two mistakes and the usual cause of a shade that drops a corner on a hot afternoon.

  6. Step 6. For a two-panel Model 3 roof, fit the rear panel first

It is the harder one to reach, and doing it with the front aperture still open gives you room to work.

1. Easiest to fit and refit

JOWUA glass roof sunshade (Juniper 2025+)

JOWUA

Folds into a package small enough to handle inside the car, which makes seating the far end much easier than wrestling a stiff one-piece panel. Mesh blocks less heat than a coated panel.

Best for: Juniper owners who want a roof shade that folds away rather than living on the roof

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)

Fit9.0
Heat8.0
Storage9.5
Build8.5
Value8.0
Overall8.6/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Folds down small enough to live under a seat, so you can run it only in summer
  • Mesh keeps the cabin from going fully dark, which is the usual complaint about solid panels
  • Juniper-specific pattern — the refreshed roof structure is not the same shape as the legacy car

What does not

  • Mesh will always block less heat than an opaque reflective panel
  • Folding and refitting is a two-minute job, so it is not something you will do daily

Manufacturer specifications

  • Double-sided high-density mesh fabric
  • Folds for storage rather than retracting on a rail
  • Sold in two fabric variants, the darker of which the manufacturer rates for greater heat reduction

2. Fewest pieces to fit

Hansshow ice-crystal roof sunshade

Hansshow

A single coated panel goes in faster than a multi-section shade. A one-piece panel is correspondingly more awkward to store afterwards.

Best for: Owners already buying other Hansshow parts

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)

Heat8.5
Storage7.5
Build8.0
Value8.0
Overall8.0/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Coated fabric puts it in the higher heat-reduction group rather than the mesh group
  • Single panel is quicker to fit than a two-piece shade

What does not

  • Single-piece panels are more awkward to store than a shade that folds into thirds
  • No quantified performance claim to compare

Manufacturer specifications

  • Foldable shade with an ice-crystal coating
  • Marketed as a heat-insulating sun visor for the Juniper roof
  • Single-piece roof panel

3. Fastest of all

JOWUA windshield sunshade

JOWUA

Cut to shape, so it locates against the glass outline in about fifteen seconds with no clips at all. It only works while parked, and has to be stowed when you drive.

Best for: Anyone who parks outside — the highest-value shade you can buy

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y L (2026+, six-seat) · Model Y (2020-2024) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)

Fit9.0
Heat9.5
Storage8.5
Build8.5
Value9.5
Overall9.0/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Solves the actual parked-heat problem — the windshield is the biggest single heat aperture in the car
  • Far cheaper than a roof shade and takes fifteen seconds to deploy
  • Cut to shape, so there is no gap at the corners where a universal shade leaves one

What does not

  • Only works while parked, unlike a roof shade which works while driving
  • Has to be stowed somewhere when you drive off

Manufacturer specifications

  • Black mesh fabric with a silver anti-light coating
  • Manufacturer claims up to 99% UV blocking
  • Cut to the specific windshield shape; listed for Juniper and Model Y L

Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

Windshield shade: the method

  1. Fold the sun visors down. They hold the top edge of the shade and stop it sliding down the glass.
  2. Unfold the shade and position the wide edge at the bottom against the dash, with the narrow edge up.
  3. Press the top corners into the A-pillar corners. A cut-to-shape shade should fill them; a generic one will not, and that gap is where heat gets in.
  4. Flip the visors back up against the shade to pin it.
  5. To stow it, reverse the order and fold along its existing creases — foil shades crease permanently, and refolding a foil shade a new way is how it eventually tears.

If a roof shade sags

Take it out and refit it, front to back, one side at a time, with the rear edge under slight tension. In the great majority of cases a sagging shade is a fitting problem and not a product problem. If it still sags after a careful refit, the panel is genuinely too long for the aperture — which usually means it is the wrong generation. Check the fitment comparison.

Removal and storage

Unseat the rear edge first, then one side, then lift the leading edge out. Fold along the frame's intended folds and nowhere else. Store flat if you can — a folding roof shade stored under compression for a winter can take a set that it never fully loses.

Questions people actually ask

How long does it take to install a Tesla sunshade?

A couple of minutes per roof panel and about fifteen seconds for a windshield shade. No tools either way.

Why does my roof sunshade sag in the middle?

Almost always a fitting error. Refit front to back, one side at a time, with the rear edge seated under slight tension.

Which panel do I fit first on a Model 3?

The rear one. It is harder to reach, and fitting it while the front aperture is still open gives you room.

Can I leave the shade in permanently?

Yes, and many owners do through summer. Store it flat rather than compressed when you take it out for winter.
