Fitment: Model 3 (2017-2023) · Full Model 3 2017-2023 fitment guide

Dim car interior lit only by its own cabin lighting

The pre-Highland Model 3 has a glass roof made of two panels — a front section over the front seats and a rear section over the back — rather than one continuous pane. That matters in two practical ways. Shades for this car come as two pieces, which means a smaller folded package and the option of running only the rear panel if your passengers are the ones complaining. It also means some sets are sold as single panels, so check the piece count rather than assuming.

On a car that is now several years old, there is a second consideration. Original tinting and glass coatings degrade, and a shade is the cheapest way to restore a cabin that has started feeling hotter than it used to. That is a legitimate reason to buy.

1. Best overall

JOWUA sunshade bundle for Model 3

JOWUA

Roof and windshield together, with a pre-Highland listing kept separate from the Highland part. The right combination on this car, and poor value if you only want one half of it.

Best for: Model 3 owners who want roof and windshield covered in one purchase

Fits: Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)

Value9.0
Overall8.6/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Buying the pair is cheaper than buying each separately and covers the two apertures that matter
  • Separate Highland and pre-Highland listings rather than one catch-all

What does not

  • You may only want one of the two, in which case the bundle is wasted money
  • The Model 3 roof is smaller than the Model Y's, so the roof shade's benefit is smaller too

Manufacturer specifications

  • Bundle pairing the roof shade with the windshield shade
  • Per-generation listings covering both the earlier Model 3 and the Highland
  • Mesh roof panel, coated windshield panel

Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

2. Best single purchase

JOWUA windshield sunshade

JOWUA

The highest-value shade you can buy for this car: cut to shape, fifteen seconds to deploy, and it addresses parked heat rather than driving glare. Has to live somewhere when you drive.

Best for: Anyone who parks outside — the highest-value shade you can buy

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y L (2026+, six-seat) · Model Y (2020-2024) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)

Fit9.0

Build8.5
Value9.5
Overall9.0/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Solves the actual parked-heat problem — the windshield is the biggest single heat aperture in the car
  • Far cheaper than a roof shade and takes fifteen seconds to deploy
  • Cut to shape, so there is no gap at the corners where a universal shade leaves one

What does not

  • Only works while parked, unlike a roof shade which works while driving
  • Has to be stowed somewhere when you drive off

Manufacturer specifications

  • Black mesh fabric with a silver anti-light coating
  • Manufacturer claims up to 99% UV blocking
  • Cut to the specific windshield shape; listed for Juniper and Model Y L

Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

3. Best mid-price pick

KUST custom-cut sunshade

KUST

Cut per vehicle across Model 3 generations at a sensible price. Variant naming is less clear than the specialists', so read it twice.

Best for: Owners who want a cut-to-shape shade without the premium-brand price

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

What works

  • Cut-to-shape fitment at a mid-market price
  • Covers both cars, so household fleets can standardize

What does not

  • Less independent fit reporting than JOWUA or BASENOR
  • Variant naming is less clear than the Tesla-specialist brands

Manufacturer specifications

  • Cut per vehicle rather than sold in generic sizes
  • Listed across Model 3 and Model Y variants
  • Folding storage

4. Budget pick

EcoNour windshield sunshade

EcoNour

Generic sizing means gaps at the pillars. It still does most of the job for a fraction of the money, and creases are a cosmetic complaint rather than a functional one.

Best for: The cheapest meaningful improvement to a hot parked cabin

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Fit6.5
Heat8.5
Storage8.0
Build7.0
Value9.5
Overall7.9/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Costs a fraction of a car-specific shade and removes most of the greenhouse effect anyway
  • Easy to replace when it eventually creases

What does not

  • Sized rather than cut to shape, so expect gaps at the A-pillars
  • Foil creases permanently and looks tired faster than coated fabric

Manufacturer specifications

  • Reflective foil windshield shade sold in size ranges rather than per-car patterns
  • Folds into a sleeve
  • Widely stocked

Do not buy a Highland shade

The Highland changed the roof. If your car has indicator stalks on the steering column, it is pre-Highland and you need a 2017-2023 shade. If you want the full set of differences, the Model 3 2017-2023 fitment page collects everything confirmed to fit this generation across all six categories.

Questions people actually ask

Does the pre-Highland Model 3 have one roof panel or two?

Two — a front section and a rear section. Shades are usually sold as a two-piece set, and some brands sell the panels separately.

Will a Highland shade fit my 2021 Model 3?

No. Buy from a listing that names 2017-2023.

Can I shade only the rear panel?

Yes, and it is a reasonable economy if the complaint is coming from the back seat rather than the front.

Do Tesla's factory tinted windows make a shade unnecessary?

No. The glass reduces some transmission but a parked car in direct sun still gets very hot, which is why a windshield shade makes a bigger difference than people expect.
