Tesla's owner's manual advises against fitting a screen protector, citing unintended inputs, delayed or unresponsive touch and electrostatic discharge, and says resulting damage is not covered by the vehicle warranty. On a pre-Highland Model 3 that guidance lands differently: your car is between three and nine years old, and if the display is not already scratched, that is a fairly strong piece of evidence about the risk.
The honest recommendation on this generation is to skip it unless glare specifically bothers you. If it does, buy a matte protector and accept the trade. If you are worried about scratches, look at the display and ask whether the thing you are protecting against has happened in the years you have owned the car.

1. Best overall
Supershieldz 15-inch tempered glass
The thinnest glass here at 0.33mm, cut for the 15-inch panel shared by the pre-Highland Model 3 and the 2020-2024 Model Y, and cheap enough to treat as consumable. No alignment frame, and a general accessory brand rather than a Tesla specialist.
Best for: Legacy Model Y and pre-Highland Model 3 owners on a budget
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model 3 (2017-2023)
What works
- The thinnest glass in this group, which is the main variable in how much the touch layer is affected
- Covers the 15-inch panel that the newer 15.4-inch parts will not fit
- Cheap enough to treat as consumable
What does not
- No alignment frame
- A general accessory brand rather than a Tesla specialist, so fitment support is thinner
Manufacturer specifications
- 0.33mm tempered glass
- Cut for the 15-inch display used by the 2020-2024 Model Y and 2017-2023 Model 3
- Marketed as anti-scratch and bubble-free
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

2. Best without covering the screen
TOPABYTE screen edge protector frame
Bezel and corner protection with nothing over the touch layer, which avoids Tesla's stated concerns. Does nothing for scratches or glare on the glass.
Best for: Owners who want the bezel protected without covering the glass
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model Y (2020-2024) · Model 3 (2017-2023)
What works
- Avoids Tesla's stated concerns entirely, because nothing is applied over the touch layer
- Protects the corner the display is most often knocked against
What does not
- Does nothing about scratches or glare on the glass itself
- Sold as part of a bundle, so you may be buying two pieces you did not want
Manufacturer specifications
- Frame that protects the display surround, not the touch surface
- Part of a three-piece console accessory set
- Listed as compatible with the 2026 Model Y Juniper
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

3. Spend it here instead
BASENOR under-screen console organizer tray
Not a screen protector. The shelf beneath the display is where items slide off in these cars, and a tray fixes a daily irritation for about the same money. It is a friction fit, so it can shift under a heavy load in a hard corner.
Best for: The dead space under the touchscreen
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)
What works
- Turns a shelf that items slide straight off into a usable tray
- No adhesive means no residue when you sell the car
What does not
- A friction fit can shift if you load it heavily and corner hard
- Single-purpose — it does nothing for the armrest bin or cup holders
Manufacturer specifications
- Non-slip base, no adhesive required
- Shaped to the shelf beneath the center display
- Listed across Model Y and Model 3 fitments
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

What fits a pre-Highland Model 3
A 15-inch panel, shared with the 2020-2024 Model Y. That is convenient — several protectors are listed for both cars — and it is also where the mistakes come from, because the 15.4-inch Highland parts look almost identical on a product page and are far more heavily promoted. Confirm the listing states 15 inches, and confirm it names 2017-2023.
The 2021 interior update does not matter here
Tesla revised the Model 3 interior in 2021, changing the console lid and the wireless charging pad. The display size and position did not change, so a 15-inch protector covers the whole 2017-2023 run. The 2021 split does matter for console accessories.
Questions people actually ask
What size is the pre-Highland Model 3 screen?
15 inches, the same panel size used by the 2020-2024 Model Y. The Highland moved to 15.4 inches.
Will a Highland protector fit my 2021 Model 3?
No. The Highland display is 15.4 inches. A Highland protector will overhang the bezel.
Did the 2021 update change the screen?
No. It changed the console lid and the charging pad. Screen size and position were unaffected.
Is a protector worth it on an older car?
For scratches, usually not — if the display has survived this long, the risk is low. For glare, a matte protector helps. That is the only case we would make for it.
