This is the most common returned purchase in this category, and it is entirely avoidable. The 2025 Model Y refresh — Juniper — changed the roof glass structure and the trim channel that a shade clips into. The shades for the two generations look the same in a product photograph and are often listed next to each other.
Which car do you have?
Do not rely on the model year, because cars delivered in early 2025 could be either and markets changed over at different times. Look at the car instead.
| Check | 2020-2024 | Juniper 2025-2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Front light | Separate headlights, no light bar | Full-width light bar across the nose |
| Rear light | Conventional tail lamps | Reflected light bar across the tailgate |
| Front cabin speaker grille | None | Ambient light strip around the cabin |
| Rear screen | None | 8-inch rear screen on Premium and Performance |
| Center display | 15 in | 15.4 in, or 16 in on Premium and Performance |
What actually changed for the shade
- The roof glass geometry. The refreshed panel is a different shape, so a legacy shade does not match the outline.
- The trim channel the shade clips into, which means the clip positions on a legacy shade do not line up.
- The frunk tub and cargo floor, which is why mats are affected too — see Juniper floor mats.
What did not change
The windshield outline is close enough that several brands list one windshield shade across both generations and the Model Y L. So if you are buying a windshield shade rather than a roof panel, this fitment problem largely does not apply to you — one more reason it is the easier first purchase.
How to buy safely
- Identify your car from the front light bar, not the year.
- Buy from a listing that names a year range. A listing that just says "Model Y" is a listing to avoid.
- If the brand sells both generations as separate products rather than variants of one, that is a good sign — it means they tooled separately.
- Check the clip count and position in the photographs against your own trim channel before fitting, while the packaging is still intact.
Then go to the right page: Juniper roof shades or 2020-2024 roof shades.
The correct shade for each roof
The glass roof structure changed with the refresh, so this genuinely is two different products rather than one with two listings.

1. For the 2025-2026 Juniper
JOWUA glass roof sunshade (Juniper 2025+)
Cut for the refreshed roof glass. A legacy panel in a Juniper leaves a gap at the rear edge, which is where the sun actually is in the afternoon.
Best for: Juniper owners who want a roof shade that folds away rather than living on the roof
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- Folds down small enough to live under a seat, so you can run it only in summer
- Mesh keeps the cabin from going fully dark, which is the usual complaint about solid panels
- Juniper-specific pattern — the refreshed roof structure is not the same shape as the legacy car
What does not
- Mesh will always block less heat than an opaque reflective panel
- Folding and refitting is a two-minute job, so it is not something you will do daily
Manufacturer specifications
- Double-sided high-density mesh fabric
- Folds for storage rather than retracting on a rail
- Sold in two fabric variants, the darker of which the manufacturer rates for greater heat reduction

2. For the 2020-2024 Model Y
JOWUA glass roof sunshade (Model Y 2021-2024)
The same construction cut for the original roof. Buying by model year here is not optional.
Best for: Legacy Model Y owners who want the same folding design
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024)
What works
- The correct pattern for the pre-2025 roof, which is genuinely a different shape
- The bundle is the cheapest way to shade the whole greenhouse at once
What does not
- Does not fit a Juniper — check the year before buying, as the listings look nearly identical
- Mesh over a large roof can sag slightly in extreme heat
Manufacturer specifications
- Legacy Model Y roof pattern, listed separately from the Juniper part
- Mesh fabric, folding storage
- Also offered as part of a multi-shade bundle with the windshield and side glass
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

Questions people actually ask
How do I tell if my Model Y is a Juniper?
Look at the front. The refreshed car has a full-width light bar across the nose; the 2020-2024 car has separate headlights and no bar. That is the fastest reliable check.
Is a 2025 Model Y always a Juniper?
In practice yes for US deliveries from early 2025 onward, but changeover timing varied by market, so check the car rather than the year.
Can a legacy shade be made to fit a Juniper?
No. The clip positions do not line up with the refreshed trim channel. There is no adjustment that fixes that.
Does the windshield shade differ between generations?
Much less so — several brands list one windshield shade across both generations and the Model Y L. Confirm on the specific listing.
