Side Window and Rear Sunshades for the Model Y

Low afternoon sun comes in through side glass, not the roof. If someone in the back seat is uncomfortable, this is the page.

Passenger reclining in a car with the roof glass open to the sky above

Here is something most roundups get wrong. A roof shade does nothing for the person in your back seat when the sun is low. At four in the afternoon in summer, the sun is coming in almost horizontally through the side glass, straight onto a rear-facing child seat or a dog lying across the bench. Shading the roof does not intercept any of that.

Side-window shades are the least-bought accessory in this hub and the one with the clearest use case: if you regularly carry children or pets in the back, this is the shade that matters and the roof panel is the luxury.

1. Best overall

JOWUA side, rear and liftgate window sunshade set

JOWUA

Covers side glass, rear quarter glass and the liftgate window with per-aperture cuts rather than suction-cup panels, so there are no gaps and nothing falls off. A multi-piece set is fiddly to fit and remove, and it does reduce visibility out of the rear quarters.

Best for: Rear-facing child seats and dogs in the back

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y (2020-2024)

What works

  • Side glass is where low afternoon sun actually hits a rear-seat passenger, and a roof shade does nothing about it
  • Per-window cuts mean no suction cups and no gaps

What does not

  • A multi-piece set is fiddly to fit and remove compared to one windshield shade
  • Reduces visibility out of the rear quarters, which some drivers will not accept

Manufacturer specifications

  • Covers side glass, rear quarter glass and the liftgate window
  • Cut per window aperture rather than a universal panel
  • Listed for the 2025+ Model Y

JOWUA windshield sunshade

JOWUA

Side shades help a rear passenger while driving; the windshield shade is what stops the whole cabin being 140 degrees when you get in. They solve different halves of the same problem.

Best for: Anyone who parks outside — the highest-value shade you can buy

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y L (2026+, six-seat) · Model Y (2020-2024) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)

Value9.5
Overall9.0/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Solves the actual parked-heat problem — the windshield is the biggest single heat aperture in the car
  • Far cheaper than a roof shade and takes fifteen seconds to deploy
  • Cut to shape, so there is no gap at the corners where a universal shade leaves one

What does not

  • Only works while parked, unlike a roof shade which works while driving
  • Has to be stowed somewhere when you drive off

Manufacturer specifications

  • Black mesh fabric with a silver anti-light coating
  • Manufacturer claims up to 99% UV blocking
  • Cut to the specific windshield shape; listed for Juniper and Model Y L

If a full side-shade set is more than you want to spend, a cheap windshield shade plus the factory tint is a reasonable compromise. It does nothing for a passenger in the back while you are driving.

Best for: The cheapest meaningful improvement to a hot parked cabin

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

What works

  • Costs a fraction of a car-specific shade and removes most of the greenhouse effect anyway
  • Easy to replace when it eventually creases

What does not

  • Sized rather than cut to shape, so expect gaps at the A-pillars
  • Foil creases permanently and looks tired faster than coated fabric

Manufacturer specifications

  • Reflective foil windshield shade sold in size ranges rather than per-car patterns
  • Folds into a sleeve
  • Widely stocked

Per-aperture cuts, not suction cups

The cheap version of this product is a mesh panel held on with suction cups or a stretchy sock that pulls over the door frame. Both are worse than they sound. Suction cups fail in heat, which is when you need them. Stretch socks interfere with the window seal and have to come off to open the window at all.

A set cut per aperture that locates in the window frame stays put, does not interfere with the glass, and can be left in. It costs more and is the only version worth buying.

The visibility trade-off

Shading the rear quarter glass and the liftgate window reduces what you can see over your shoulder and through the mirror. On a car with a camera-based reversing view and blind-spot monitoring this is less serious than it would otherwise be, but it is real and some drivers will not accept it. If that is you, fit the rear-door side shades only and leave the quarters and liftgate clear.

Check your local regulations too. Rules on what may obstruct side and rear glass vary by state, and a permanently fitted shade is treated differently from a removable one in some places.

Questions people actually ask

Are side window shades legal?

Rules on obstructing side and rear glass vary by state, and removable shades are generally treated differently from permanent tinting or fixed panels. Check your own state's requirements before fitting anything permanently.

Do side shades work better than tinting?

They block more light than legal tinting can, and they are removable. Tinting is invisible and permanent. For a child in a rear-facing seat, a shade blocks considerably more.

Will a side shade stop the window opening?

A frame-located shade should not. A stretch-sock design will, which is one of several reasons not to buy one.

Are these available for the Model 3?

The current per-aperture sets are Model Y-focused. Model 3 owners have fewer options, and the honest answer is that the windshield shade plus factory tint is the practical route for now.
