Start with the cargo liner. If you carry a dog in a Model Y, the cargo floor is the surface that degrades first and the one that costs most to put right, and a moulded cargo liner is the single purchase that changes the most. The 3D MAXpider cargo liner is our pick because it protects the floor without stealing the depth a tall-walled tray would.
After that, the honest ordering depends on where your dog actually travels. Behind the second row is a cargo problem. On the bench is an upholstery problem. In direct sun under a glass roof is a temperature problem. These are not the same purchase and most roundups on this subject pretend they are.
What a dog actually does to the interior
- Claws. Short, repeated scratching on the cargo floor as the dog turns and settles. Carpet does not recover from this and the Model Y cargo floor carpet is not replaceable as a single trim piece.
- Hair. It migrates into the cargo side grooves and under the floor panel, where a vacuum nozzle cannot follow it, and it stays there.
- Mud and water. A wet dog shakes, and the spray reaches the seat backs and the side trim as well as the floor.
- Heat. These cars have large glass roofs and the rear glass is nearly upright. A parked cabin heats quickly, and a dog has no way to move out of direct sun.
- Nose prints and drool on the rear glass. Cosmetic, annoying, and the one thing on this list no accessory fixes.
What to buy, in order
| Priority | What | Why first |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cargo floor liner | The surface that takes the claw damage and the one you cannot cheaply repair |
| 2 | Side-well coverage | Where hair and grit accumulate out of reach of a vacuum |
| 3 | Rear and side window shades | The only item on this list that is about the dog rather than the car |
| 4 | Seat-back protection | Only relevant if the dog travels on the bench rather than behind it |
| 5 | Mud flaps | Reduces the spray that arrives in the cargo area in the first place |
The generation question, briefly
Cargo-area parts are among the most generation-specific accessories on the car, because the Juniper changed the rear-bench folding geometry and the cargo floor pan with it. A Juniper trunk mat leaves a visible gap in a 2020-2024 Model Y, and the reverse is worse.
Two of the picks above are listed for both generations and one is Juniper-only. If you are not certain which car you have, the fitment pages settle it quickly, and the cargo liner and trunk mat roundup lists the full set of options per generation rather than the dog-specific subset.

1. Best overall
3D MAXpider cargo liner
The cargo floor is where a dog does its damage, and this liner protects it without eating the usable depth the way a tall-walled tray would. Listed for both 2020-2024 and Juniper Model Y. It covers the floor, not the seat backs or the side walls.
Best for: Protecting the main cargo floor without losing usable depth
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- The raised loading-edge lip is what stops a spill running out onto the bumper
- Thin enough that you do not lose meaningful cargo height
What does not
- Covers the cargo floor only — the under-floor well needs its own piece
- Expensive for what is, functionally, one molded sheet
Manufacturer specifications
- Same three-layer construction as the footwell liners
- Shaped to the cargo well with a raised lip at the loading edge
- Separate part numbers per Model Y generation
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

2. Best coverage for a Juniper
Motrobe trunk mat and side-bin set
Covers the cargo floor and the side wells together, which matters with a dog because the side grooves are where hair and grit collect and where a vacuum nozzle will not reach. Juniper only.
Best for: Juniper owners who want the cargo floor and the side wells covered together
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- Turns the side grooves — normally wasted space — into usable bins
- Juniper-specific, so it does not sit proud at the wheel arches the way a legacy part does
What does not
- Five-seat layout only; the seven-seat cargo floor is a different shape
- The bins reduce how flat the floor is when you want to slide something long in
Manufacturer specifications
- Built for the 2025-2026 Juniper five-seat cargo bay
- Side-bin design that uses the molded grooves either side of the cargo floor
- Wipeable surface
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

3. Best for a dog travelling in the back
JOWUA side, rear and liftgate window sunshade set
Side, rear and liftgate shades, which is the one accessory on this page aimed at the dog rather than at the car. A glass-roofed cabin in direct sun is the actual risk; shading the rear glass is the cheap mitigation. It is not a substitute for not leaving a dog in a parked car.
Best for: Rear-facing child seats and dogs in the back
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y (2020-2024)
What works
- Side glass is where low afternoon sun actually hits a rear-seat passenger, and a roof shade does nothing about it
- Per-window cuts mean no suction cups and no gaps
What does not
- A multi-piece set is fiddly to fit and remove compared to one windshield shade
- Reduces visibility out of the rear quarters, which some drivers will not accept
Manufacturer specifications
- Covers side glass, rear quarter glass and the liftgate window
- Cut per window aperture rather than a universal panel
- Listed for the 2025+ Model Y
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

4. Best if the dog rides on the seat
BASENOR 3-piece rear seat-back cover
The largest protected surface area available for the second row, which is what you need if the dog travels on the bench rather than behind it. It protects the seat backs; it does not stop hair reaching the upholstery the dog is sitting on.
Best for: Families — the largest protected surface area available
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)
What works
- Covers the whole seat back rather than just the kick zone, which is what you want with toddlers
- Three pieces means the center section is covered too, not just the two outer seats
What does not
- Full coverage changes how the cabin looks from the back seat
- More material to remove and clean than a small kick mat
Manufacturer specifications
- Three pieces covering the full rear face of the front seats
- Listed across Model Y, Model 3 and the Juniper
- Wipe-clean surface
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

What we are not going to recommend
This site covers mats, liners, shades, screen protectors and cabin storage for two cars, and it does not cover dog crates, barriers, hammocks or harnesses. Those are real products and some of them are the right answer for a large dog, but we have not researched them to the standard we hold the rest of this site to and we are not going to pad this page with them.
If what you need is a barrier between the cargo area and the second row, buy that from somewhere that specialises in it. What we can tell you properly is which cargo liner, which trunk mat and which shade set fits which Model Y, and that is what this page does.
Cleaning, which is the part that never stops
A removable liner is worth buying partly because it can leave the car. Hair on a carpeted cargo floor is a long job with a brush attachment; hair on a TPE liner you can lift out, shake, hose and leave to dry. That difference is the one you feel every week rather than once.
The same logic applies to the second row. How to clean Tesla floor mats covers the method and the one mistake worth avoiding, which is putting a TPE part back wet.
If your dog shares the car with children, the Model Y with kids checklist overlaps with this page in useful ways — the seat-back and side-panel protection is the same purchase for both problems.
Questions people actually ask
What is the best Tesla Model Y liner for a dog?
A moulded cargo liner covering the main cargo floor. It takes the claw damage, lifts out for cleaning, and does not cost you cargo depth the way a deep-walled tray would. On a Juniper, a trunk mat that also covers the side wells is worth the small extra.
Do I need a trunk mat and a cargo liner?
No — they overlap. Pick one based on coverage: a cargo liner protects the main floor, a full trunk mat set usually adds the side wells and the sub-trunk lid. The side wells are where dog hair goes, so on a Juniper the set is the better buy.
Do window shades keep a dog cool in a parked Tesla?
They reduce direct sun through the glass, which helps on the move. They do not make a parked car safe in warm weather, and no accessory does.
Will a Juniper trunk mat fit my 2023 Model Y?
No. The Juniper cargo floor and folding geometry changed, and Juniper-cut mats leave gaps in the older car. Order per generation.
