Search for cargo protection for a Model Y and you get two things with similar names and similar prices. A cargo liner is molded to the shape of the cargo well, with a raised lip around the perimeter and — on the good ones — a raised lip at the loading edge. A trunk mat is a flat sheet cut to the floor outline. They are not alternatives for the same job.
What each one is for
| Problem | Cargo liner | Trunk mat |
|---|---|---|
| Something leaked in the back | Contains it | It runs off the edge |
| Mud dragged over the loading edge | The raised lip catches it | The paint takes it |
| Shopping slides around | No real help | Slight friction help |
| Dog in the back | Floor protected, sides exposed | Minimal help |
| Lost cargo height | A few millimeters | Almost none |
The loading edge is the part that matters
The single most vulnerable surface in the back of a Model Y is the painted lip at the rear of the cargo opening, because every bag, bike wheel and bag of compost gets dragged across it. A liner with a raised loading-edge lip covers that. A flat mat stops short of it. If you only take one thing from this page: buy the one with the lip.
For the same reason, a trunk-sill protector is a better use of money than a flat trunk mat if your concern is damage rather than dirt.
If you carry a dog
Neither product is really the answer. A dog scuffs the side walls and the seat backs, not the floor, and a liner protects only the floor. What you want is a boot liner with raised sides, or a cargo cover that extends up the walls and over the folded seat backs. Buying a flat mat and hoping is the usual mistake. Our picks for the cargo floor itself are in cargo liners and trunk mats.
Our call
Buy a molded cargo liner with a loading-edge lip. Skip the flat mat entirely — it costs nearly the same and does meaningfully less. If your real problem is things sliding about rather than things leaking, you do not want either of these: you want a trunk organizer or side bins.
The products on both sides of this
A molded liner and a flat mat are different purchases with different failure modes. Here is one of each, plus the kit that makes the question moot.

1. Best molded cargo liner
3D MAXpider cargo liner
Raised edges and a molded shape that follows the cargo well, which is the whole point: a spill stays in the tray instead of running under the floor panel. Costs more than a flat mat and only covers the one surface.
Best for: Protecting the main cargo floor without losing usable depth
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- The raised loading-edge lip is what stops a spill running out onto the bumper
- Thin enough that you do not lose meaningful cargo height
What does not
- Covers the cargo floor only — the under-floor well needs its own piece
- Expensive for what is, functionally, one molded sheet
Manufacturer specifications
- Same three-layer construction as the footwell liners
- Shaped to the cargo well with a raised lip at the loading edge
- Separate part numbers per Model Y generation
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

2. Best flat trunk mat
Motrobe trunk mat and side-bin set
Cheaper, lighter, easier to pull out and hose down, and perfectly adequate if what you are protecting against is dog hair and grocery bags rather than liquid. No raised edge means no containment.
Best for: Juniper owners who want the cargo floor and the side wells covered together
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- Turns the side grooves — normally wasted space — into usable bins
- Juniper-specific, so it does not sit proud at the wheel arches the way a legacy part does
What does not
- Five-seat layout only; the seven-seat cargo floor is a different shape
- The bins reduce how flat the floor is when you want to slide something long in
Manufacturer specifications
- Built for the 2025-2026 Juniper five-seat cargo bay
- Side-bin design that uses the molded grooves either side of the cargo floor
- Wipeable surface
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

3. Best if you want both
3W full-coverage TPE liner kit
Includes the cargo floor and the sub-trunk well alongside the footwells, which is the sensible answer if you have not bought either yet. Juniper and Highland only.
Best for: Juniper owners who want the densest TPE and the widest coverage
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)
What works
- The broadest single-kit coverage we found for the Juniper, seat backs included
- Came out ahead of both MAXpider and WeatherTech on fit in one independent Juniper comparison
What does not
- A newer name than WeatherTech or MAXpider, so there is less long-run evidence of how the material ages
- Seat-back pieces are a nice extra but are not as well finished as dedicated seat-back protectors
Manufacturer specifications
- TPE throughout, described by the manufacturer as a higher-density compound than entry-level sets
- Kit covers footwells, frunk, cargo floor, sub-trunk and seat backs
- Separate part numbers per Model Y generation
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

Questions people actually ask
Can I use both a liner and a mat?
There is no point. The liner already covers the floor, and stacking adds height without adding protection.
Does a cargo liner reduce usable space?
By a few millimeters of height. In practice it is not noticeable unless you are loading something to the exact limit of the opening.
Will a liner for a 2023 Model Y fit a 2025?
No. The refreshed cargo floor changed shape. Buy to your generation.
What protects the painted loading lip best?
A dedicated trunk-sill protector. A cargo liner's raised loading lip helps, but a sill guard is the part designed for it.
