How to Clean Tesla Floor Mats

Five minutes for all-weather liners, considerably longer for carpet. The one thing that ruins a liner is heat.

All-weather liners are easy. Carpeted mats are not. Both get done wrong in the same way — people put them back in before they are fully dry, which traps moisture against the carpet underneath and produces exactly the smell they were trying to avoid.

All-weather liners: the method

  1. Step 1. Lift them out of the car

All of them, including the rear. Do not try to clean a liner in situ — whatever you wash off runs into the carpet beneath it, which is the one surface you were protecting.

  2. Step 2. Knock out the loose debris

Hold the liner vertically and knock it against a hard surface. Grit, stones and dried mud come out in seconds and save you scrubbing them into the texture.

  3. Step 3. Hose from the top edge down

Rinse with the liner propped at an angle so water carries debris out over the low edge rather than pooling in the deep corner. A pressure washer is unnecessary and on thin TPE can lift a seam.

  4. Step 4. Agitate with mild soap and a brush

Car-wash soap or dish soap, and a medium-stiff brush. Work along the texture rather than across it. Avoid solvent-based cleaners, degreasers and tire shine — they can soften TPE and will leave a slippery surface.

  5. Step 5. Rinse until the water runs clear

Soap residue left in the texture attracts dirt faster than clean rubber does, which is why a mat you have just cleaned sometimes looks dirty again within a week.

  6. Step 6. Dry flat, in the shade, completely

This is the step that matters. Lay the liner flat on a level surface out of direct sun and leave it until there is no moisture in the texture at all. Never prop it curved against a wall, never leave it in direct summer sun, and never use a heat gun or a hairdryer.

  7. Step 7. Vacuum the footwell before refitting

Whatever got past the liner is underneath it. Vacuum the carpet, check the retention hooks are clear, and refit so the liner engages its anchor points properly.

1. Easiest to clean

WeatherTech FloorLiner

WeatherTech

Tall walls mean the mess stays in the liner rather than spreading, and the rigid material takes a stiff brush without complaint. It is the least pleasant surface underfoot and can creak when cold.

Best for: Snow-belt owners who want the deepest tray walls available

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Cleanability9.0
Value7.0
Overall8.6/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • The tall perimeter wall is the most convincing containment in this category for slush and road salt
  • A long-standing fitment database means the year you own is usually explicitly listed, not implied

What does not

  • The rigid material is the least pleasant underfoot of the premium options and can creak on a cold morning
  • Finish is utilitarian — nobody buys these because they look good

Manufacturer specifications

  • High-density tri-extruded material with raised channel walls
  • Digitally measured per vehicle and per model year
  • US-manufactured; the company's own fitment lookup is by year, make and model

3W full-coverage TPE liner kit

3W

Dense TPE across footwells, frunk, cargo and sub-trunk, so one hosing session does the whole car. The seat-back pieces included are the weakest part of the kit.

Best for: Juniper owners who want the densest TPE and the widest coverage

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Cleanability8.5
Value8.5
Overall8.8/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • The broadest single-kit coverage we found for the Juniper, seat backs included
  • Came out ahead of both MAXpider and WeatherTech on fit in one independent Juniper comparison

What does not

  • A newer name than WeatherTech or MAXpider, so there is less long-run evidence of how the material ages
  • Seat-back pieces are a nice extra but are not as well finished as dedicated seat-back protectors

Manufacturer specifications

  • TPE throughout, described by the manufacturer as a higher-density compound than entry-level sets
  • Kit covers footwells, frunk, cargo floor, sub-trunk and seat backs
  • Separate part numbers per Model Y generation

3. The other thing worth rinsing

BASENOR under-screen console organizer tray

BASENOR

A console tray lifts out and rinses in seconds, which is the point of a friction fit over adhesive. It can shift under a heavy load in a hard corner.

Best for: The dead space under the touchscreen

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)

Overall8.7/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Turns a shelf that items slide straight off into a usable tray
  • No adhesive means no residue when you sell the car

What does not

  • A friction fit can shift if you load it heavily and corner hard
  • Single-purpose — it does nothing for the armrest bin or cup holders

Manufacturer specifications

  • Non-slip base, no adhesive required
  • Shaped to the shelf beneath the center display
  • Listed across Model Y and Model 3 fitments

Carpeted mats: a different job

  1. Vacuum thoroughly, in two directions, with a brush head. Most of what looks like staining on a car mat is embedded dry grit.
  2. Pre-treat stains with a dedicated carpet cleaner and let it dwell for the time on the bottle — not longer, because a cleaner left to dry on carpet leaves a ring.
  3. Agitate with a soft brush. Do not soak. Carpet mats have a rubberized backing and water that gets between the layers takes days to leave.
  4. Extract rather than rinse, if you have a wet vacuum. If you do not, blot with towels and repeat rather than adding more water.
  5. Dry flat, in the shade, for considerably longer than you think — a day or more. A carpeted mat that feels dry on the surface is often still wet in the backing.

What not to use, on either type

  • Solvent cleaners and degreasers — they can soften TPE and strip carpet backing adhesive.
  • Tire shine or vinyl dressing on a footwell liner. It makes the surface slippery, which under a shoe is genuinely dangerous.
  • A pressure washer at close range on thin TPE or on a carpeted mat's bound edge.
  • A washing machine. See are Tesla floor mats machine washable for why.

How often

All-weather liners: whenever they look dirty, and once at the end of winter regardless, because road salt left in a liner will dry to a white crust and find its way back onto your shoes. Carpeted mats: vacuum monthly, deep-clean twice a year, and accept that a carpeted mat in a wet climate is a losing battle — which is the argument for all-weather liners in the first place.

Questions people actually ask

How do you clean Tesla all-weather floor mats?

Lift them out, knock out the loose debris, hose them down, agitate with mild soap and a brush, rinse until the water runs clear, then dry flat in the shade before refitting.

Can I use a pressure washer?

At a distance, on a thick liner, yes. Close range on thin TPE can lift a seam, and on a carpeted mat it will damage the bound edge.

Why do my mats smell after cleaning?

They were refitted before they were fully dry, so moisture is trapped against the carpet underneath. Take them out and dry both properly.

Will the sun dry them faster?

Yes, and it can warp them permanently. A molded liner holds its shape through thermal memory; heat destroys that. Dry flat in the shade.
