The Model Y and Model 3 both have rear-facing air vents beneath the front seats, feeding conditioned air to the rear footwells. They sit at floor level facing backwards, which makes them an almost perfect trap for anything dropped in the back of the car: coins, crumbs, small toys, hair ties, crayons.
Getting something out of one is genuinely awkward. The grille is fine enough to stop you reaching in, a vacuum nozzle will not always pull a coin against the grille geometry, and you end up on the floor of the car with tweezers and a torch. That experience is why this page exists, and why this is the cheapest genuinely useful thing in this hub.

1. Best overall
Under-seat air vent covers
Open-grille covers that clip or friction-fit over the rear-facing under-seat vents with no adhesive, listed across both cars. Any cover restricts airflow to some degree, so fit the open-grille type and never a solid panel. Easy to dislodge when vacuuming.
Best for: Stopping debris falling into the rear footwell vents
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)
What works
- Those vents collect coins, crumbs and small toys, and clearing them is genuinely awkward
- No adhesive, so nothing is permanent
- One of the cheapest protective parts on the car
What does not
- Any cover restricts airflow to some degree — fit the open-grille type, not a solid panel
- Easy to dislodge when vacuuming
Manufacturer specifications
- Grille covers for the rear-facing vents beneath the front seats
- Clip or friction fit with no adhesive
- Listed across Model 3 and Model Y fitments

2. Pair it with this
BASENOR anti-kick side mats
The lower side trim beside the rear footwells is the other surface that gets filthy in the same part of the car. Worth buying alongside, not instead. Juniper-specific.
Best for: The lower side panels that seat-back covers miss
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- Covers the area that still gets filthy after you have protected the seat backs
- Cheap addition to a seat-back set rather than a standalone purchase
What does not
- Only worth buying alongside seat-back protection, not instead of it
- Juniper-specific, so legacy owners have fewer options
Manufacturer specifications
- Panels for the lower side trim beside the rear footwells
- Listed for the Juniper
- Wipe-clean surface
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

3. The wrong answer for this problem
Yeslak under-seat storage box
Deliberately listed to rule it out. An under-seat box does not stop debris reaching the vents and it costs rear foot room. If vents are your complaint, buy covers. It can also foul the vents outright.
Best for: Using the space under the front seats
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- The only accessory that uses a genuinely empty volume rather than subdividing an existing one
- Keeps items out of sight without filling the console
What does not
- Reduces rear-passenger foot room under the seat
- Can foul the under-seat air vents on some layouts, which is the thing to check before buying
Manufacturer specifications
- Slides into the void beneath the front seats
- Listed per Model Y generation
- Rigid shell with a lid
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

Open grille, never a solid cover
The rattle question
A loose vent cover is itself a rattle source, which is a slightly absurd way to make a car worse. Friction and clip fits are fine; anything that merely rests in place will buzz. If one starts rattling, a strip of felt tape at the contact edge resolves it. Our guide to the under-seat vent covers diagnosis, including the cases where the noise is debris rather than the cover.
Clean the vent before you cover it
- Slide the front seat fully forward and tip the backrest if you can, to get light onto the vent.
- Vacuum the grille with a narrow nozzle before fitting anything, so you are not sealing debris in.
- Use tweezers or long needle-nose pliers for anything the vacuum will not lift. Do not push it further in.
- Dry the area, then fit the cover and check it is seated on both ends.
Questions people actually ask
What is the under-seat vent on a Model Y for?
It supplies conditioned air to the rear footwells. It also sits exactly where dropped items collect.
Will a cover reduce airflow to the back?
An open grille cover has a small effect. A solid panel has a large one and should not be fitted.
How do I get something out of the vent?
Vacuum with a narrow nozzle first, then tweezers or long needle-nose pliers under a torch. Never push an object further in.
Can the covers themselves rattle?
A loose one can. Choose a clip or friction fit, and add felt tape at the contact edge if one starts buzzing.
