How to Remove the Model Y Trunk Liner

Two panels, no tools, and one clip arrangement that breaks if you lift from the wrong end. Also the quickest way to find out how much storage you have been driving over.

Open cargo area of an electric SUV with the floor panel lifted

The Model Y cargo floor lifts straight out by hand: empty the trunk, find the recessed pull or the cut-out at the rear edge of the panel, lift from the rear and draw the panel back towards you before raising it clear. No tools, no trim removal, under a minute. The carpeted liner that sits over it comes out the same way. The reason this question gets asked is that lifting from the wrong end feels like the panel is stuck, and the instinct at that point is to pull harder.

Do not pull harder. The panel is held at its forward edge by a lip or clips depending on the generation, and lifting the front first loads exactly those. Lift the rear, slide back, then raise - in that order - and the panel comes free without resistance.

Before you start

  • Empty the cargo area completely, including anything in the side bins. A panel lifted with weight still on it flexes, and that is when a clip lets go.
  • Work with the liftgate fully open and the car on level ground. The panel is light but awkward and you need both hands.
  • Have somewhere to put it. The panel is close to the full width of the cargo area and will not stand up on its own.
  • No tools. If you find yourself reaching for a trim tool on a Model Y cargo floor, stop and re-check which edge you are lifting.
  1. Step 1. Clear the cargo area and lift any cargo cover out of the way

Everything out, including the small items that live in the side bins. You want an empty, flat panel with nothing resting on any part of it.

  2. Step 2. Find the pull point at the rear edge

Run your fingers along the rear edge of the floor panel, nearest the liftgate opening. There is a recess, a cut-out or a strap depending on the build. That is the only place you should be lifting from.

  3. Step 3. Lift the rear edge and draw the panel towards you

Raise the rear edge a few inches, then pull the panel back towards the bumper before lifting any further. This disengages the forward edge instead of levering against it, and it is the step that makes the difference between easy and stuck.

  4. Step 4. Lift the panel clear and set it aside on its face

Once the forward edge is free the whole panel comes out in one piece. Rest it face down on a soft surface - the top face is the one you look at, and a driveway will mark it.

  5. Step 5. Lift the carpeted liner separately if it did not come with the panel

On some builds the carpet is a separate layer sitting in the well. It lifts out by hand in the same way. Check underneath it before you put it back - this is usually where an unexplained smell is coming from.

  6. Step 6. Clean the well while it is open

The sub-floor well is bare molded plastic, so a vacuum and a wipe is all it takes, and this is the one moment it is genuinely easy to reach. Let it dry fully before the floor goes back.

  7. Step 7. Refit the forward edge first

Reverse the removal: engage the forward edge or clips first, then lower the rear edge into place and press it down until it sits flush. If the panel rocks, the forward edge is not seated - lift and try again rather than pressing harder.

Why you would take it out at all

Three reasons, and the most common is the least interesting: something has spilled and the carpet needs to come out to dry. The second is that you are fitting a cargo liner or sub-floor bins and need to see what you are working with. The third is the genuinely useful one - most Model Y owners have a deep storage well they have never used, because they have never had the floor up.

That well is where a tyre repair kit, a tow hook, a folded bag and the things you want in the car but not on display all belong. Under-floor storage bins covers how to divide it up, and the published figures for the whole cargo area are in Model Y trunk dimensions.

Under-floor storage bins (Model Y)

TAPTES

The sub-floor well is the storage most owners never use, because they have never had the floor panel out. Fitted bins turn it from a single deep cavity where things roll around into usable compartments. Listed for the 2020-2024 Model Y and the Juniper.

Best for: Dividing the deep well beneath the cargo floor

What works

  • The sub-floor well is the single most wasted volume in a Model Y, and bins make it usable
  • Everything stays below the load floor, so the cargo area still looks empty

What does not

  • You have to lift the floor panel to reach anything, so it is for things you need rarely
  • Bins reduce the well's total volume slightly

Manufacturer specifications

  • Bins shaped to the sub-floor well under the main cargo floor
  • Separate Juniper and legacy listings
  • Rigid dividers with lift handles

3D MAXpider cargo liner

3D MAXpider

If the reason you are lifting the liner is that it is stained, this is the part that stops it happening again: a molded cargo liner with a raised edge, listed for the 2020-2024 Model Y and the Juniper. It sits on top of the floor panel rather than replacing it, so removal stays just as easy afterwards.

Best for: Protecting the main cargo floor without losing usable depth

What works

  • The raised loading-edge lip is what stops a spill running out onto the bumper
  • Thin enough that you do not lose meaningful cargo height

What does not

  • Covers the cargo floor only — the under-floor well needs its own piece
  • Expensive for what is, functionally, one molded sheet

Manufacturer specifications

  • Same three-layer construction as the footwell liners
  • Shaped to the cargo well with a raised lip at the loading edge
  • Separate part numbers per Model Y generation

3. Best mat and side-bin set

Motrobe trunk mat and side-bin set

Motrobe

Covers the cargo floor and the side bins in one order, which matters here because the side bins are the surfaces that get ignored while the floor gets protected. Listed for the Juniper. Fit it after you have had the floor out once, so you know which pieces you actually need.

Best for: Juniper owners who want the cargo floor and the side wells covered together

What works

  • Turns the side grooves — normally wasted space — into usable bins
  • Juniper-specific, so it does not sit proud at the wheel arches the way a legacy part does

What does not

  • Five-seat layout only; the seven-seat cargo floor is a different shape
  • The bins reduce how flat the floor is when you want to slide something long in

Manufacturer specifications

  • Built for the 2025-2026 Juniper five-seat cargo bay
  • Side-bin design that uses the molded grooves either side of the cargo floor
  • Wipeable surface

What to put back, and in what order

If the reason the liner came out was a spill, this is the moment to decide whether to keep protecting carpet with cleaning or to stop the problem. A molded cargo liner sits over the floor panel, has a raised edge, and turns the next spill into something you lift out rather than something you blot. Cargo liners and trunk mats for the Model Y has the full set of options, and cargo liner versus trunk mat is the decision underneath it.

Fit bins before liners if you are doing both, and check the liner still lies flat with the bins in. Stacking a thick liner over tall bins is the one combination that makes the cargo floor sit proud, and you will notice it every time the liftgate closes.

Questions people actually ask

How do you remove the Model Y trunk floor?

Empty the cargo area, lift the rear edge of the floor panel using the recess or cut-out nearest the liftgate, draw the panel back towards the bumper to free its forward edge, then lift it clear. No tools are needed and it takes under a minute.

Why does the Model Y trunk floor feel stuck?

Almost always because it is being lifted from the front edge, which is where it engages. Lift the rear edge, pull back, then raise. If it still resists, there is weight still on the panel or something in a side bin is fouling it.

Is the carpeted trunk liner washable?

The removable carpet layer can be taken out and cleaned, but it is carpet: it absorbs, it holds odour, and it takes a long time to dry fully. If a spill has already soaked it, the honest options are a thorough clean and a long dry, or a molded liner so it does not happen again.

What is under the Model Y trunk floor?

A deep molded plastic well. It is bare, it does not stain, and it is the storage most owners have never used. It suits the items you want in the car but not on display.

Can you stand on the Model Y trunk floor panel?

No. It spreads load across an open well rather than carrying it. Kneeling on it to reach the back of the cargo area is the usual way it gets cracked.
