The best value storage upgrade in the car, for the things you need least often. Those two facts are connected.

Two children lifting a suitcase into a car cargo area

Lift the cargo floor panel in a Model Y or a Model 3 and you find a deep, wide, completely unstructured well. Most owners put a tire inflator in one corner of it and nothing else, which means the single largest piece of storage in the car is mostly air.

Bins fix that for very little money, and there is a reason this is the best-value upgrade in this hub: nothing has to look good, nothing has to fit precisely, and nobody ever sees it. It is pure utility.

1. Best overall

Under-floor storage bins (Model Y)

TAPTES

Rigid dividers with lift handles, shaped to the sub-floor well, with separate Juniper and legacy listings. Everything stays below the load floor so the cargo area still looks empty. You have to lift the floor panel to reach anything, and the bins reduce the well's total volume slightly.

Best for: Dividing the deep well beneath the cargo floor

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)

Fit8.5
Capacity9.0
Rigidity8.5
Access6.5
Value8.5
Overall8.2/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • The sub-floor well is the single most wasted volume in a Model Y, and bins make it usable
  • Everything stays below the load floor, so the cargo area still looks empty

What does not

  • You have to lift the floor panel to reach anything, so it is for things you need rarely
  • Bins reduce the well's total volume slightly

Manufacturer specifications

  • Bins shaped to the sub-floor well under the main cargo floor
  • Separate Juniper and legacy listings
  • Rigid dividers with lift handles

Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

2. Better if you need daily access

Motrobe trunk organizer (side-bin design)

Motrobe

Side bins above the floor rather than below it, so you can reach them without lifting a panel. Five-seat Juniper only, and they collapse when empty.

Best for: Juniper owners who want the cargo side grooves used

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)

Capacity8.5
Rigidity7.0
Access9.0
Value8.5
Overall8.3/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Uses space that is otherwise completely wasted
  • Soft sides mean no rattle and no hard edges against luggage

What does not

  • Five-seat only — the seven-seat floor is a different shape
  • Soft sides collapse if you unload the bin and leave it empty

Manufacturer specifications

  • Built for the 2025-2026 Juniper five-seat cargo bay
  • Side-bin layout that fills the molded grooves either side of the floor
  • Soft-sided construction

Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

3. Pair it with this

3D MAXpider cargo liner

3D MAXpider

A cargo liner protects the floor panel that sits over the well, which is the surface everything is dragged across. Covers the main floor only, not the well itself.

Best for: Protecting the main cargo floor without losing usable depth

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)

Fit9.0
Coverage7.5
Material9.0
Cleanability9.0
Value7.0
Overall8.3/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • The raised loading-edge lip is what stops a spill running out onto the bumper
  • Thin enough that you do not lose meaningful cargo height

What does not

  • Covers the cargo floor only — the under-floor well needs its own piece
  • Expensive for what is, functionally, one molded sheet

Manufacturer specifications

  • Same three-layer construction as the footwell liners
  • Shaped to the cargo well with a raised lip at the loading edge
  • Separate part numbers per Model Y generation

Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

The access trade-off is the whole decision

To reach the well you have to move whatever is on the cargo floor, then lift the floor panel. That is a two-handed operation and it is why this space suits things you need rarely rather than things you need often. Put your emergency kit, your spare charging adapter and your jump pack down there. Do not put the dog's lead down there.

If you want capacity you can actually reach, side bins above the floor are the better answer — see Model Y trunk organizers.

What belongs in the well

  • Tire inflator and plug kit.
  • Jumper leads or a jump pack.
  • A spare mobile charging cable or adapter.
  • A folded windshield sunshade, if it folds flat. This is the storage problem that stops people using theirs.
  • A first-aid kit, a torch, a tow strap.
  • Not: anything you need at the roadside in a hurry with the trunk full.

Generation fitment

The well shape changed with the Juniper refresh, and a seven-seat Model Y has a shallower well because the folded third row occupies part of it. Buy to your car. On a Model 3 the well is proportionally even more significant, because the trunk opening limits what you can do with the floor above it — see Model 3 trunk organizers.

Questions people actually ask

What is the well under the Tesla cargo floor for?

Nothing specific. It is unallocated storage, which is why dividing it is such a cheap gain.

Does a seven-seat Model Y have the same well?

No — the folded third row takes up part of it, so the well is shallower. Check the listing names your configuration.

Can I still carry heavy things on the floor above the bins?

Yes. The floor panel is structural enough for normal loads, and the bins sit below it rather than supporting it.

Is this better value than a trunk organizer?

For pure capacity gained per dollar, yes, clearly. For convenience, no — you cannot reach it quickly.
