The Model 3 is a sedan with a conventional boot lid, not a hatchback, and that is the fact that governs this entire category. The trunk itself is reasonably deep. The opening is not large. A rigid organizer whose internal volume suits the space may simply not fit through the aperture to get there.
That is why collapsible organizers are the right answer on this car and rigid boxes are not, which inverts the advice for a Model Y. It is also why the deep well under the trunk floor is so underused on a Model 3: it is awkward to reach through a small opening, so people stop bothering.

1. Best overall
Model 3 trunk organizer
Collapsible, which is the right design for a small boot opening — a rigid box of the same internal volume will not go through the aperture. It loses shape when empty, and it does not address the sub-floor well where Model 3 space is really lost.
Best for: Model 3 owners, whose trunk is deep and narrow rather than wide
Fits: Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)
What works
- The Model 3 trunk opening is small, and a collapsible organizer fits through it where a rigid box does not
- Keeps shopping from sliding into the deep well under the floor
What does not
- Collapsible means it loses shape when empty
- Does not address the sub-floor well, which is where Model 3 space is really lost
Manufacturer specifications
- Shaped to the Model 3 trunk aperture and well
- Listed per Model 3 generation
- Collapsible construction

2. Best for the deep well
Under-floor storage bins (Model Y)
Bins for the well beneath the cargo floor, which on a Model 3 is proportionally even more of the car's storage than it is on a Model Y. Lifting the floor panel to reach anything makes it suitable only for what you need rarely.
Best for: Dividing the deep well beneath the cargo floor
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)
What works
- The sub-floor well is the single most wasted volume in a Model Y, and bins make it usable
- Everything stays below the load floor, so the cargo area still looks empty
What does not
- You have to lift the floor panel to reach anything, so it is for things you need rarely
- Bins reduce the well's total volume slightly
Manufacturer specifications
- Bins shaped to the sub-floor well under the main cargo floor
- Separate Juniper and legacy listings
- Rigid dividers with lift handles
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

3. Best for cold loads
Insulated frunk cooler bag
A small insulated bag, used in the frunk rather than the trunk so cold food is nowhere near the cabin. An hour or two of cold, not a day.
Best for: Groceries and tailgates, in the frunk rather than the cabin
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)
What works
- The frunk is the one compartment in the car with no cabin-air connection, so it is the right place for cold food
- A bag conforms to the tub where a rigid cooler fights it
- Lifts straight out to carry
What does not
- Insulation in a soft bag is modest — this is an hour or two of cold, not a day
- Takes most of the frunk, so it is not something you leave in permanently
Manufacturer specifications
- Insulated foam-lined bag sized to sit inside the frunk tub
- Used alongside a molded organizer rather than instead of one
- Zip closure
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

Where the space actually is
| Volume | Capacity | How much people use it |
|---|---|---|
| Trunk floor | Good | Fully |
| Sub-floor well | Substantial | Barely — the floor panel is in the way |
| Frunk | Small and shallow | Partly, usually for the charging cable |
| Rear seat footwells with seats folded | Large | Only when loading something long |
Highland or pre-Highland
The trunk aperture and well are broadly similar across the generations, and several organizers are listed for the whole run. The Highland did change the interior substantially elsewhere, so a product claiming to fit 2017-2026 is more plausible here than it would be in floor mats — but check regardless.
The thing nobody mentions
A Model 3 trunk is lined with carpet, not a wipeable surface, and the sub-floor well is bare. A spill in the well is genuinely unpleasant to clean because you cannot get at it properly. If you carry anything that might leak, put it in the frunk instead — that is the compartment designed to be hosed out.
Questions people actually ask
Why is a collapsible organizer better in a Model 3?
Because the boot opening is small. A rigid box of useful internal volume may not fit through the aperture, no matter how well it would sit once inside.
What is under the Model 3 trunk floor?
A deep, unstructured well. It is a substantial amount of storage that most owners barely use because the floor panel is in the way.
Will a Model Y trunk organizer fit?
No. The Model Y cargo bay is wider and the shapes are different throughout.
Where should I put something that might leak?
The frunk. The Model 3 trunk and its well are carpeted or bare and awkward to clean; the frunk is the compartment you can wipe out.
