The windshield sunshade is the one to buy first. A road trip in a Tesla is a series of parked intervals in sun you did not choose, at chargers with no shade, and the windshield is the largest piece of glass pointing at the sky. Fitting a shade at every stop is the difference between getting back into a cabin you can touch and one you cannot.
The rest of this page is short on purpose. Most road-trip accessory lists for these cars are twenty items long and about half of them are chargers, adapters and phone mounts. This site covers mats, shades, screen protectors and cabin storage, so what follows is the subset we can actually tell you something useful about.
What a long drive exposes
Three problems get much worse with distance, and they are the reason this list is what it is.
- Heat at every stop. You park at a charger for twenty minutes in direct sun, repeatedly, in places you have never been. A windshield shade is the only accessory that meaningfully addresses this, and it works because the windshield is both the biggest aperture and the easiest to cover.
- Nowhere for food. A long drive means food in the car, and the cabin has no cold storage and no sensible flat space for a bag. The frunk is the answer and almost nobody uses it that way.
- Noise. A rattle you tolerate on a twenty-minute commute becomes the dominant feature of hour four. Cup holders and loose console items are the usual sources.
| Accessory | Fixes | Does not fix |
|---|---|---|
| Windshield shade | Cabin temperature at every parked stop | Anything while you are driving |
| Frunk cooler bag | Cold food and drink, out of the cabin | Frunk capacity — a Model 3 frunk is small |
| Cup-holder insert | Rattle, tipping, cups that are too narrow | Rattles from anywhere else in the console |
| Seat-back protector | Kick marks and scuffs from behind | Hair, crumbs or anything on the seat itself |
The frunk is the road-trip feature nobody uses
Both of these cars have a sealed, carpeted front compartment that is physically separate from the cabin. On a long drive that is exactly where food, drink and anything that might leak belongs, and yet most owners fill the frunk once at delivery and never open it again.
The Model Y frunk is published at around 4.1 cu ft and the Model 3 Highland's at around 3.1 cu ft, so a soft cooler bag is the right shape of thing to put in there — a rigid box wastes the taper. Model Y frunk dimensions has the full picture of what fits, and frunk coolers ranks the options.

1. Best overall
JOWUA windshield sunshade
A road trip is a sequence of parked intervals in unfamiliar sun, and the windshield is the largest solar aperture in the car. This is the highest-value shade you can buy and it fits every generation of both cars. It only works if you actually fit it at every stop.
Best for: Anyone who parks outside — the highest-value shade you can buy
Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y L (2026+, six-seat) · Model Y (2020-2024) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)
What works
- Solves the actual parked-heat problem — the windshield is the biggest single heat aperture in the car
- Far cheaper than a roof shade and takes fifteen seconds to deploy
- Cut to shape, so there is no gap at the corners where a universal shade leaves one
What does not
- Only works while parked, unlike a roof shade which works while driving
- Has to be stowed somewhere when you drive off
Manufacturer specifications
- Black mesh fabric with a silver anti-light coating
- Manufacturer claims up to 99% UV blocking
- Cut to the specific windshield shape; listed for Juniper and Model Y L
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

2. Best for food and drink
Insulated frunk cooler bag
Puts cold food in the frunk instead of on the second-row floor, which is the difference between arriving with lunch and arriving with a spill. Listed across both cars, although a Model 3 frunk is much shallower and takes considerably less.
Best for: Groceries and tailgates, in the frunk rather than the cabin
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)
What works
- The frunk is the one compartment in the car with no cabin-air connection, so it is the right place for cold food
- A bag conforms to the tub where a rigid cooler fights it
- Lifts straight out to carry
What does not
- Insulation in a soft bag is modest — this is an hour or two of cold, not a day
- Takes most of the frunk, so it is not something you leave in permanently
Manufacturer specifications
- Insulated foam-lined bag sized to sit inside the frunk tub
- Used alongside a molded organizer rather than instead of one
- Zip closure
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

3. Best cheap fix
BASENOR cup-holder insert
Stops the rattle that becomes unbearable at hour four and holds a cup upright through a highway interchange. Fits all four Model Y and Model 3 generations. It is a small part doing a small job, and it is the best value on this page.
Best for: Stopping cups from rattling and tipping
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)
What works
- Tesla's cup wells are wide, and a narrow cup rattles in them constantly — this is the direct fix
- Cheapest single accessory on this site that you will notice every day
What does not
- Reduces the maximum cup diameter the well can take
- Needs lifting out to clean properly after a spill
Manufacturer specifications
- Insert mat shaped to the console cup-holder wells
- Soft compound chosen to damp movement
- Supplied as part of the four-piece set and separately
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

4. Best if the back seat is occupied
Yeslak seat-back kick protector
One part listed across every Model 3 and Model Y generation, protecting the surface that takes the most damage on a long drive with passengers behind you. Nothing about it is road-trip-specific, which is rather the point.
Best for: One part that covers every Model 3 and Model Y generation
Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model Y L (2026+, six-seat) · Model 3 (2017-2023) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026)
What works
- The broadest fitment claim in this group, which simplifies buying for a two-car household
- Waterproof surface means spilled drinks wipe off rather than soak in
What does not
- A part that fits everything fits nothing perfectly — expect a slightly generic outline
- Pocket is shallow compared with the BASENOR equivalent
Manufacturer specifications
- Waterproof, stain-resistant microfibre leather surface
- Integrated storage pocket
- Listed as fitting Model 3 and Model Y from 2017 through 2026 and later
Specifications as published by the manufacturer. We have not independently tested this product.

What we would skip
Roof-mounted anything, unless you already own it. A long drive is the worst time to discover what a roof box does to consumption, and on a trip planned around charging stops that is not a trade you want to make blind.
A second windshield shade for the rear glass, if you are buying one thing. The rear glass matters for a dog or a rear-facing child seat and barely at all for cabin temperature compared with the windshield. Roof or windshield first sets out the ordering.
And a screen protector bought for a road trip specifically. Glare on the display is a real problem and matte glass genuinely fixes it, but Tesla's manual advises against fitting a protector at all, and a long drive is not the reason to overrule that. The warranty page explains why.
If you are buying for both cars
Three of the four picks here are listed across every generation of both cars, which is unusual on this site — most accessories are generation-specific. The windshield shade, the cooler bag and the cup-holder insert are all effectively car-agnostic within the Model Y and Model 3 range, which makes them the safest things to buy for someone else.
If that is what you are doing, best gifts for Tesla Model Y owners is written for exactly that problem and is more useful than this page for it.
Questions people actually ask
What is the single most useful Tesla road-trip accessory?
A windshield sunshade. A long drive is a series of parked intervals in unfamiliar sun, and the windshield is the largest and easiest aperture to cover. It is also the cheapest meaningful improvement to a hot parked cabin.
Can you use the frunk as a cooler?
With an insulated bag, yes, and it is the most under-used storage on the car for a long drive. It is sealed off from the cabin, so a leak stays out of the interior. A Model 3 frunk is much shallower than a Model Y's and takes correspondingly less.
Do cup-holder inserts really matter?
On a long drive, more than you would expect. Rattle that is background noise on a commute becomes the main event after a few hours, and cup holders are the most common source.
Are these the same for a Model 3 and a Model Y?
Three of the four picks are listed across every generation of both cars. The frunk cooler is the exception in practice rather than in fitment: it fits both, but a Model 3 frunk holds considerably less.
