Tesla Frunk Coolers: What Actually Works

The frunk has no connection to cabin air, which makes it the right place for cold food. It is not a refrigerator.

Open car cargo area with groceries loaded in the back

The frunk is the only compartment in a Tesla with no connection to cabin air. The trunk shares air with the interior, so anything you put in it warms to cabin temperature and anything that smells, smells in the car. The frunk does neither. That is the whole argument for using it for cold food, and it is a good one.

What it is not is refrigerated. On a hot day a closed frunk gets warm, and soft insulation in a bag buys you an hour or two of usefully cold food, not an afternoon. Set your expectations there and the frunk cooler is a genuinely useful thing. Expect more and you will be disappointed.

1. Best overall

Insulated frunk cooler bag

TAPTES

An insulated foam-lined bag sized to the frunk tub, which conforms where a rigid cooler fights the shape, and lifts straight out to carry. Soft insulation means an hour or two of cold, not a day, and it takes most of the frunk while it is in there.

Best for: Groceries and tailgates, in the frunk rather than the cabin

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026) · Model 3 Highland (2024-2026) · Model 3 (2017-2023)

What works

  • The frunk is the one compartment in the car with no cabin-air connection, so it is the right place for cold food
  • A bag conforms to the tub where a rigid cooler fights it
  • Lifts straight out to carry

What does not

  • Insulation in a soft bag is modest — this is an hour or two of cold, not a day
  • Takes most of the frunk, so it is not something you leave in permanently

Manufacturer specifications

  • Insulated foam-lined bag sized to sit inside the frunk tub
  • Used alongside a molded organizer rather than instead of one
  • Zip closure

2. Best dual-purpose option

Teslarati frunk organizer box

Teslarati

A watertight ABS box with compartments, which genuinely works as an ice bucket for a tailgate as well as a frunk organizer the rest of the time. Rigid ABS is the noisiest construction here when the box is not full.

Best for: Owners who want compartments and an ice-bucket second use

Fits: Model Y (2020-2024) · Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)

Rigidity9.0

Value8.5
Overall8.6/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • The compartment sizing is clearly designed around what people actually keep in a frunk
  • Being watertight makes it genuinely dual-purpose for a tailgate or a beach day

What does not

  • Rigid ABS is the noisiest construction in this group when it is not full
  • A full box permanently claims the frunk's depth, unlike a divider

Manufacturer specifications

  • Rigid ABS box with internal compartments
  • Compartments sized for a tire inflator, cleaning kit, charging adapters and emergency gear
  • Doubles as an ice bucket because it is watertight

3. Best to use with a cooler bag

Yeslak front trunk organizer (Juniper)

Yeslak

A clipped-in three-section organizer that holds an insulated bag in place instead of letting it slide around an empty tub. Fixed sections mean no room for one large awkward item, and rigid plastic can knock when the frunk is empty.

Best for: Juniper owners who want the frunk split into fixed sections

Fits: Model Y Juniper (2025-2026)

Rigidity9.0
Access8.5
Value8.5
Overall8.7/ 10 — our editorial score, not a lab test

What works

  • Clips in, so it does not slide around an empty frunk the way a loose bag does
  • Rigid walls keep a charging cable from collapsing into the rest of the space
  • Juniper-specific: the refreshed frunk is deeper and a legacy organizer does not match it

What does not

  • Fixed sections mean you cannot carry one large awkward item
  • Rigid plastic can knock audibly against the tub when the frunk is nearly empty

Manufacturer specifications

  • Polypropylene construction, described by the manufacturer as waterproof
  • Three-section layout that clips into the frunk tub
  • Listed specifically for the 2026 Juniper frunk

Soft bag or hard box?

Two approaches to frunk cold storage
Insulated soft bagWatertight rigid box
InsulationModerate, foam-linedMinimal unless you add ice
Holds ice or waterNot usuallyYes — that is the point
Conforms to the tubYesNo
Carries away from the carYes, easilyHeavy and awkward
Doubles as an organizerNoYes
Rattles when emptyNoYes

The practical setup

The combination that works is a molded or clipped organizer to divide the tub, with an insulated bag sitting in one section. The organizer stops the bag sliding around on the way home; the bag keeps the cold where it belongs. Neither alone is as good.

If you want the full comparison of a dedicated cooler against a general-purpose organizer, cooler vs plain organizer makes the case properly.

Two things to avoid

  • Do not leave melting ice loose in the frunk. The tub has a drain in most configurations, but water in a compartment with electrical components nearby is not something to be casual about.
  • Do not store cold food in the frunk overnight and forget it. The frunk is out of sight, and out of sight is exactly how food gets forgotten.

Questions people actually ask

Does the Tesla frunk stay cool?

No. It is simply isolated from cabin air, which is why it is the right place for an insulated bag. The frunk itself warms up on a hot day.

How long will food stay cold?

With a foam-lined soft bag, an hour or two usefully. With a watertight box and ice, longer. Neither is a substitute for a plug-in cooler.

Can I put ice directly in the frunk?

Better not to. Use a watertight container. Even where the tub drains, loose meltwater in that compartment is not worth the risk.

Is the Model 3 frunk big enough for a cooler?

For a small insulated bag, yes. It is much shallower than a Model Y's, so a box is out of the question.
